Such deceptive practices distort product ratings, mislead customers, and undermine competitors. Detecting fake reviews can be challenging, although specific indicators, such as generic content or an unusually high proportion of five-star ratings, can raise suspicion.

Amazon’s AI Integration

For several years, Amazon has been utilizing AI technology to combat fake reviews, and the company affirms that additional investments in sophisticated tools will enhance customer and seller protection on its platform. Leveraging machine learning algorithms, Amazon’s fraud-detection AI analyzes multiple factors, including the author’s relationships with other online accounts, sign-in activity, review history, and unusual behavior. By detecting suspicious accounts and scrutinizing the connections between purchasing accounts and product sellers, Amazon can proactively intercept fake reviews before customers encounter them.

The Pursuit of More Effective Measures

Despite Amazon’s progress in addressing fake reviews, concerns raised by Which? persist. The consumer advocacy group estimates that approximately one in seven online consumer reviews in the UK are fabricated. While recognizing Amazon’s efforts, Which? emphasizes that the current actions are insufficient to combat this significant problem. Fake reviews have significantly increased the likelihood of customers choosing low-quality products. In response, Amazon reports blocking over 200 million suspected fake reviews in the past year, thanks to its enhanced detection methods. However, the company emphasizes the need for increased collaboration between private entities, consumer groups, and governments to develop more effective strategies.

Collaboration and Legislative Measures

In light of the ongoing battle against fake reviews, Amazon calls for greater stakeholder collaboration. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill, currently under consideration in the UK parliament, aims to strengthen the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) legal powers in addressing this issue. While Amazon’s plea for a collaborative approach is welcomed by Which?, the organization advocates for the UK legislation to go beyond its current scope and explicitly criminalize the buying, selling, and hosting of fake reviews. It is worth noting that UK-based companies exhibit a strong presence on Amazon.co.uk, as indicated by the rankings of the most reviewed sellers. According to Statista, out of the top 20 leading sellers on the platform, 17 have headquarters in the United Kingdom. MusicMagpie garnered the highest favorable reviews in the past 30 days as of February 2023, with 5,538 reviews.

The Way Forward

The CMA emphasizes that it has taken significant measures against fake and misleading reviews and is actively investigating cases, including Amazon. Updates regarding these investigations are expected later this year. Amazon’s efforts to combat review brokers have resulted in legal action against 94 “bad actors,” including US, China, and Europe fraudsters. While these actions showcase Amazon’s commitment to the cause, critics maintain that more needs to be done to address the persistent presence of fake reviews on online marketplaces.
